Hollande Wins French Presidency, Promising ‘New H

French President Nicholas Sarkozy conceded defeat today in the presidential elections to Socialist candidate Francois Hollande, making him the first incumbent president to lose an election in France since 1981.

Hollande, who was leading 51.7 percent to 48.3 percent in the exit polls, will be France’s first socialist president since Francois Mitterrand left office in 1995.

“I’ve tried to do my best to protect the French people from the unprecedented crisis that has shaken the world,” said Sarkozy Windows 7 oem key, whose defeat makes him the eighth leader of a Eurozone country to be replaced or swept from office in just over a year.

But Hollande’s victory was a clear rejection of Sarkozy’s attempts to get the debt crisis under control through an austerity program.

“Austerity can no longer be the only option for Europe,” Hollande said today in his acceptance speech in reference to Sarkozy’s policies to cut government spending.

Under Sarkozy, France’s unemployment rate rose to 10 percent. Hollande wants to put France on a different economic track, promising to raise taxes on France’s wealthiest and stimulate economic growth. During his campaign, Hollande promised to deliver more jobs for policemen and 60,000 jobs in the education sector without increasing France’s total number of civil servants.

“May 6 gave us a new start for Europe, a new hope for the world,” Hollande said today in his acceptance speech.

Hollande used one of President Obama’s favorite campaign terms several times in his speech Office Stand-Alone Programs, noting that “change” is a “heavy mandate,” but it is his “mission and duty.”

But the potential for change under Hollande in the way Europe tackles its debt crisis Office Stand-Alone Programs, with more stimulus and less austerity, makes European and American markets nervous.

But experts say Hollande doesn’t have a lot of room for maneuvering.

Nicole Bacharan, an expert on French-American relations at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris, said that it’s unclear what impact Hollande’s victory will have on European and American markets.

“Hollande wants to reopen negotiations on European monetary agreement,” Bacharan said. “He thinks people are only focused on austerity and cutting spending and deficits. He wants to have something included about the necessity of economic growth, but he has been vague on how he will create that.”

Today’s parliamentary elections in Greece only added to the global economic uncertainty, as the potential Greek failure to secure bailout funds has far greater ramifications for the international markets than Hollande’s French presidential victory.

After months of violent anti-austerity rioting, many Greek voters ditched the two parties that have led the country for decades, supporting austerity and securing European bailout funds.

According to the exit polls, the radical leftwing party Syriza has made strong gains and the far-right Golden Dawn party has won enough votes to enter parliament. This puts the Greek austerity plan in jeopardy, and, consequently, the Euro zone and global markets.

Old Town, Orono residents and businesses to receiv

ORONO, Maine — Orono and Old Town residents and business owners will soon have access to the Internet that’s 125 times faster than what they have now.

The organizations behind the effort to bring “super-high-speed” network service to the area argue it will spur economic development and the continued growth of a technology hub in the region.

The project to bring a Gigabit Main Street Internet Network to Old Town and Orono will be led by GWI, a Biddeford-based telephone and Internet service provider.

Representatives from Orono and Old Town, the University of Maine, GWI, business owners and other groups involved with the project gathered Wednesday in Barrows Hall at UMaine to learn more about the service.

The jump from Internet carried over legacy networks — or telephone and cable lines that weren’t initially designed to give people access to the Web — to the new fiber optic network will be a dramatic one, according to GWI CEO Fletcher Kittredge.

He likened the conversion from broadband to Gigabit Main Street to the switch from dial-up service to broadband, but to a much higher degree. Dial-up typically runs at 56 kilobits per second, while current standard broadband speeds in the area average around 8,000 kilobits.

The new fiber-optic services from GWI will rocket that to 1 million kilobits, or a gigabit.

Other Maine Internet service providers also are working to boost the speed of their connections. Time Warner Cable announced last week it was increasing Internet speeds for all of its residential customers across Maine and launching new service tiers for customers who had greater speed demands.

Countries such as South Korea, Japan and Sweden are well ahead of the curve in providing communities with gigabit technology, according to experts at Wednesday’s press conference.

That’s where an effort called Gig.U comes in.

Gig.U is a nationwide initiative to bring high-speed fiber-optic Internet to research universities and their surrounding communities. UMaine was among the first institutions in the country to get onboard with the idea, which 36 other schools have signed onto. With Wednesday’s announcement, UMaine takes a leap ahead most of the other Gig.U members.

Blair Levin, executive director of Gig.U replica watches, said Wednesday that the idea is to create an “innovation hub” connected to the outside world and the community itself by super-high-speed gigabit networks. He argued that Internet speeds and bandwidth limits have held back the capabilities of many institutions.

“We, as a country, should want to eliminate bandwidth as a constraint to innovation,” Levin said.

Levin said the new service will allow researchers and companies to send immense amounts of data to universities and laboratories across the globe. It gives universities and businesses the ability to transmit everything from entire DNA sequences to extremely high-resolution photographs, Levin said, adding that increasing bandwidth could lead to the creation of unforeseen products and services.

“Eventually, networks like this will be throughout Maine and the rest of the U.S.,” Kittredge said, adding that the services need to start out in small scale to determine whether public demand will warrant expanding them to a broader regional base.

“We will plant the first seed in fertile economic soil,” he said. Kittredge said the Orono and Old Town area, with the University of Maine at the center, is prime real estate for getting the high-speed service off the ground and considering whether it will work in larger markets such as Bangor or rural markets in northern and eastern Maine.

For area businesses and researchers inside and outside the university, having so much more bandwidth available will open up new opportunities with far-reaching consequences, according to Kittredge.

The Orono-based Down East Emergency Medicine Institute uses high-resolution photographs taken from aircraft to search for missing people. In the past, the agency has had to use much slower Internet connections and wait many hours to upload the hundreds or thousands of images brought back from a single search, according to the institute’s director, Richard Bowie.

Because each photograph took about 7 minutes to upload, checking each one for signs of a missing person was a slow, tedious process replica watches, Bowie said. Valuable search time was lost while waiting for the next image to finish its upload.

Under the new GWI service, DEEMI searchers will be able to study each image within seconds.

“It will help save lives,” Bowie said.

Dave Edson, CEO of James W. Sewall Co., an Old Town-based firm that provides consulting to clients on forestry and other natural resources, energy and infrastructure, said his company will be able to accomplish much more with the limits of its former bandwidth removed. The company, which was founded in the 1880s, now has clients in nearly 40 states and across the globe.

A speedy, reliable Internet connection is “beyond being critical to business success today,” Edson said. “Where you can save time replica watches, you can improve your competitive position.”

GWI’s fiber-optic network will be open to competitors, who can offer their own services to customers in the area, according to Kittredge. Kittredge said GWI needs to partner with competitors to see whether the gigabit network is viable to spread throughout Maine.

Kittredge said the service would be “comparably priced” to current broadband services at around $59.95 per month for a quarter-gigabit capacity, though that price isn’t final. GWI says the network could be ready for its first crop of customers by September.

CORRECTION:

An earlier version of this story has been updated to indicate that GWI is not the only Internet provider in Maine to offer gigabit service. Other providers, including Time Warner, offer dedicated lines to individual businesses. Also, while standard Internet service in the area currently has speeds around 8 megabits per second, Internet service providers do offer packages with higher speeds.

New Chip Will Make Samsung’s Next Galaxy Smartpho

When Samsung unveils the third-generation of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone next week — presumably the Galaxy S III — the device will sport a brand new chip: the Exynos 4 Quad.

Based on the ARM Cortex A9 Tattoo Gun Set, the chip is both powerful and efficient. It runs at 1.4 gigahertz and is designed to enable heavy-load applications like 3-D games and 1080p video recording and play-back. But the processor’s marquee feature is battery consumption. According to Samsung, Exynos 4 Quad has twice the processing capability of its dual-core predecessor, but consumes 20 percent less power.

Sounds like a nice enhancement to the Galaxy S III Tattoo Kit, which is expected to also feature a 4.6-inch display with a 1280-by-720 pixel resolution, as well as an 8-megapixel camera and LTE support Setting Tattoo Machine, when it officially debuts at a May 3 event in London.

Is this the 2009 Dodge Ram

UPDATE: This is the real thing. See here.

A word of caution: We have no info other than the photo itself, which certainly appears to be the real deal and has been posted at DodgeTalk.com. For all we know, it’s a ‘chop, but let’s assume for the sake of discussion that it isn’t. If this is indeed the 2009 Ram, then Chrysler should soon find itself very much in the thick of the truck-segment mix. Of course, in the battle to win truck buyers, it’s the tech specs that ultimately get people to commit. We don’t know what those’ll be yet, but in terms of appearance, this is a grown-up and classy evolution of the Ram nameplate.

The most important visual element, the grille, ensures that it is instantly identifiable as Dodge’s full-size truck. Gone are the round-bottomed headlights in favor of the wraparound\parallelogram-shaped units shown. They’re simple and fit the rest of the look. The truck pictured is obviously a higher trim level, as indicated by the polished wheels and two-tone paint scheme. Speaking for myself, it’s easily as good-looking as the current GMC Sierra and Ford F-150, the two best-looking full-size trucks. 2008 is going to be a very interesting year in the segment as both Ford and Dodge bring their latest, greatest Tattoo Supplies, best and brightest to the market and into battle against the year-old offerings from GM and Toyota.

If this is the new Ram, we’re looking forward to seeing more of it.

Thanks to Gary for the tip Tattoo Supplies!

BMW to launch toned-down line of M Performance Aut

We just wrapped up the Detroit Auto Show, but BMW has already moved on to Geneva. The German automaker announced today that it’s going to be showing a new line of what it’s calling “M Performance Automobiles” at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

These vehicles will sit between standard Bimmers and M vehicles in the lineup, and apparently offer more than just cosmetics. While BMW has offered M Sport appearance packages over the past two decades, today’s announcement specifically mentions “exclusive engine variants” and suspension tweaks among the upgrades M Performance models would offer. Given the mention of both all-wheel drive and diesel models in the announcement, it seems like the new line is specifically geared towards both of those features that BMW likely believes would tarnish the original M line or just wouldn’t be appropriate for an M3 or M5.

We’re awaiting a reply from BMW on what this announcement means for the U.S. market Buy Missoni Dresses, but we imagine the M Performance cars sold here might resemble something like the 2003-2006 ZHP performance package sold on the E46 3 Series.
